‘Echoes’, 2022 Oil on canvas, 60cm x 90cm

This painting explores temporal fluidity through a collection of keepsakes, each laden with symbolism that speaks to the intricate interplay between memory, legacy, & time. It invites viewers to explore the depths of personal history & collective consciousness. An old jewellery box with a string of pearls cascading outward is a testament to the enduring legacy of familial bonds. The emerging vine of ivy serves as a visual metaphor for the intertwined branches & roots of ancestry, carrying the weight of generations past into the present moment.

Perched on top of the jewellery box, an antique clock stands as a silent sentinel with its mirrored reflection offering a distorted glimpse into the labyrinth of memory. Through its backwards portrayal, the clock symbolises the cyclical nature of time, where the past informs the present, and the present shapes the future. Adjacent to the clock, a small statue of Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep & dreams, beckons viewers to explore the realms of subconscious thought & collective memory. Like dreams themselves, memories ebb & flow, blurring the boundaries between reality & imagination, past & present.

A crystal ball serves as a poignant reminder of the uncertainty inherent in the passage of time. Within its reflections, the source of light which gives life to all my paintings. The presence of a feather & an apple underscores the fleeting nature of life & the inevitability of change. Each element within the composition serves as a testament to the intricate dance of time, weaving threads of remembrance & anticipation into the tapestry of human experience & identity.

The Parade, St Mary’s

‘Relics’, 2024 Oil on canvas board, 41cm x 51cm

Time is like an alchemist. It distills our memories, melting them down into a perfectly curated concoction of nostalgic joy and ache from our fragmented pasts. This painting explores the impact of our pasts on our future, both positively through cherished memories and also negatively as symbolised by our old toys of plastic melting in an ever-changing world.
